I am entering my 12th year teaching at Tumwater High School and will continue to encourage young individuals to push themselves academically and socially. One of the best parts of teaching is building strong teacher/student relationships to help all students succeed in life. As a social studies teacher, we will be learning how different societies act and work together, as well as learning how to develop our own perspectives and back them up using factual information. The World History teachers at THS have worked hard to create invigorating lessons and units to inspire the best creativity while complying with state standards.
AP World History is a college level course that has an added benefit of providing college credit if a student passes the AP exam in May. We cover an amazing level of content explaining questions of why the world is the way it is. Why is the Middle East mostly Muslim? Why does everyone want to trade with China? What set off the rapid development of technology from the telegraph to modern cell phones? Because it is a college level course, students do much more activities and rigor that makes them think critically of our world. However, there are increased responsibilities for students to keep up with class, which include maintaining homework readings, weekly assessments, and large projects. Although it sounds rough, most students who take this class say it was their favorite of sophomore year and set them up for success junior and senior years.
This is my first year teaching Civics and Current World Problems (CWP) to seniors. In this class we will learn about our government, the processes of it, and how they can get involved as a US citizen and community member. After first semester, the class switches to CWP, which covers current topics of today's world and has students examine them to explain origins, solutions, and overall dialogue to improve understanding.
Please reference Google Classroom for assignments/daily work; keep in mind you will need a Tumwater Account to log in. Parents can ask their son/daughter to log in if you want to see progress or future assignments.
